Hooray, we have officially made it to week 2 of the Thug Kitchen 21 Day Challenge! Today I will be reviewing the Thug Kitchen Strawberry Oat Smoothie, found on the blog here. This was a recipe I was excited to test as I have never thought to put mint, strawberry and oats in a smoothie together. I always have oats in the morning for breakfast. Now that it is summer however, it is nice to have something cooler. Oats are great because they have a low glycemic index, are gluten free and are super filling. I don’t know about you but I get hangry if I don’t eat enough in the morning!
At A First Glance
This recipe has five ingredients, all which are dead easy to find in any grocery store. Because strawberries and mint are in in season right now, the cost for this recipe is very reasonable.
The directions were easy to follow as well, however do note that the recipe says it makes about 2 ¾ cups of smoothie. It definitely makes more than that, mine made about 4 cups! I doubled the recipe, so I ended up with about 4 medium-sized (2 cup) mason jars worth. It was great for leftovers, which is unusual for smoothies. I also found because of the amount of ingredients, I had to change how I blended it part way. So it took a bit longer than expected.
Taste Test
The overall taste of this smoothie was very good. It was smooth in consistency (make sure to use rolled oats) and easy on the palette. The mint wasn’t overpowering at all. In fact, next time I would add more to mine. I loved the baby pink colour as well. I think this would be a huge hit with any child. I’ve also thought about making it for my friend’s baby shower (to announce she’s having a girl). The ideas with this drink are endless!
Final Verdict
I would definitely make this again. I gave it an overall rating of 88% – if only the directions on serving size were more accurate, I think I would be aware of the time it takes to make.
Please let me know if you have made this one or what you think of oats in smoothies!
