Review of the Chana Masala, Almond Cardamom Crisp, and Dark Chocolate Cherry Bites

I am still living off all the leftovers from the Oh She Glows Challenge – I think I may be doing a 40 day challenge without even knowing it! I loved doing it so much, I kind of forgot it was over, and now it feels weird not counting down with you all and posting all my meals.  Luckily I’m still very behind schedule so we can reminice before my next challenge starts up!  For those of you who are wanting to know what my favourite oh she glows recipe is, do not worry, that is coming!! I am going to work through these last few reviews, before making a final post.

Today I am going to be reviewing the Chana Masala (from the cookbook), the Almond Cardamom Crisp, and the Dark Chocolate Cherry Bites.  Surprise surprise, they were all good 🙂 It’s becoming so hard to be critical, I think I need my masters friends that helped me with the chocolate challenge here for every meal I make.  What do you say, friends?

So without further ado, I will start my review of the Chana Masala.  I think I rated this as one of my highest reviews so far! Thinking back I really enjoyed it, but it was the combination of how filling it was, how cheap the ingredients were, and the easy preparation and cooking time which really made this a recipe to try.  A friend of mine has been wanting to try some Oh She Glows recipes but doesn’t know where to start… if I could suggest any ‘easy’ recipe, it would be this one.  Not a lot of preparation of veggies, not food processor needed, and can really be made with stuff kicking around the pantry. The hardest ingredient to find is the garam masala spice, but I found some great recipes to make your own if you don’t have an ethnic grocery store near by (see here).   You can see my full review here.

Next i’m reviewing the Almond Cardamom Crisp.  I really enjoyed this combined with coconut yogurt (or kefir is my other favourite, although haven’t seem to find a vegan version I like yet).  I made this into a breakfast because who doesn’t like dessert for breakfast hehe! My highlights with this recipe: easy to prepare, great ingredients (loved the combination of cardamom and pear) and works well as a leftover.  Downsides: this took a little longer to bake than suggested, and it didn’t come out ‘crispy’ unless I took the foil off at the end and broiled it.  Also, if making this as a breakfast, don’t forget to grind up the almonds the night prior (sorry tenants upstairs).  You can view my complete review here.  Photography in Vintagerous glass (minus the mug – from Anthropologie)

Lastly, here is my review for the Dark Chocolate Cherry Bites.  These came at the very end of my challenge, as I was still living off the desserts from the chocolate challenge – and well I felt a little done with sweet things! Wow, I really wish I made these at the beginning of the challenge though.  I work out really early in the morning, and have a metabolism that makes me super hungry, no matter when I wake up (I blame it on being a foodie hehe).  So basically, I need something small but energizing, and these sure did the trick! Only downside, I anticipate needing a good food processor for this one, unless you can soak the dates before hand (although haven’t tried that so it might turn too mushy).  You can see my full review here.
